Three Faculty Positions - Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM, Chile) invites applications for three faculty positions. The main focus of this search is at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level. Exceptionally, well qualified candidates may be considered at a more advanced career level.

The areas of specific interest are:

1) Solid Mechanics with a research concentration in mechanics of materials, failure theory, fracture mechanics, material damage, contact mechanics. Particular attention will be given to candidates working on applications of these subjects to reliability analysis of mechanical systems. (Code 18-04-16A)

2) Advanced Manufacturing/Mechanical Design. Possible areas of interest include but are not limited to metal additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping, manufacturing and rapid tool generation, precision/electrically/optically assisted manufacturing, smart mechanisms design, computer aided product design, design automation. (Code 18-04-16B)

3) Fluid Mechanics/Thermal Sciences. Possible areas of interest include but are not limited to computational fluid dynamics, turbomachinery modeling, fluid-structure interaction, turbulence, microscale heat transfer, advanced thermal energy systems. (Code 18-04-17)

Applicants for the positions are expected to teach at undergraduate and graduate levels, initiate and sustain independent research, obtain research funding, supervise graduate and undergraduate students, and participate in the academic affairs of the Department.

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field. Applications before graduation will be accepted, but the doctorate must be completed by the time of appointment. The anticipated start date is March 2019. The successful candidate must demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship. Proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable but it is not a requirement. Applicants not fluent in Spanish should be willing to acquire within one year sufficient proficiency to be able to teach and interact with students.

Qualified applicants should submit a cover letter with a statement of research plans and teaching interests, comprehensive curriculum vitae listing all publications and conferences, education and experience, and contact information of at least two references. Please enclose copies of academic credentials.

Applications should be sent in PDF format to: director.mec@usm.cl, sending a copy to: postulaciones.rrhh@usm.cl. The email should include the position code. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until all positions are filled.

Salaries are competitive at the international level, and are complemented with research incentives. Health insurance and other benefits are included. For further information please contact director.mec@usm.cl.
